Today I want to start a Breakthrough Success journey with you. (See special aid at the bottom). You can do this at any time of the year, not just New Year’s; it really doesn’t matter. Why? Because normally people start off the year with a fresh outlook, and looking forward to what they’re going to do, what they’re going to accomplish. Very often these come in the form of New Year’s resolutions. Well, quite frankly, New Year’s resolutions don’t even make it through the third week. 95% of them fail before the third week is over, and those are little, bitty things. “I want to reduce weight.”, “I want to go on a diet.”, “I want to exercise three times a week.” Those are small things. But really, what you want to do is have a new outlook on life of where you’re going and what you’re planning to do.
How are you going to make 2016 something really special? How are you going to breakthrough? What I mean is not just to success, but what I look for is breakthrough success. Now, what do I mean by breakthrough success? It’s actually success that you can’t really even see for yourself.
Think of success as reaching your goal. When most people reach their goal they are satisfied. When satisfied people tend to lose much of their drive and motivation.
Just think of the person or yourself struggling and working hard for some major accomplishment. At this time, most people tend to enjoy their success and lose much of the reason to push themselves to a new level. In fact, they have reached a plateau. (see “How to Ensure Goal Success”, to revisit how to drive yourself to your next level or goal.) In exercise, sports or weightlifting, you may have heard of people reaching a plateau, they often think their body needs to adjust. Fortunately for me, I was trained by a champion, Joe won the tri-state, Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, heavy weight division. He pushed me right through these plateaus or expected levels I would reach. Those were true breakthroughs, beyond what I expected.
In other words, something that you see as a goal is usually within your reach and you have a normal path to get there. It’s what you think you can do. What I’m talking about is breaking through to the next level or the level after that. Something that you can’t see, but other people can see that you might have that potential, or that if you are to attain your goal, all of a sudden you could possible see: “Wait a minute, I could really shoot much further.” Most people never do that. It has to do with their comfort zone, their family, friends, all kinds of influences around them. It’s what they know, and they’re restricted by what they know, not what they don’t know yet. I’ll explain that in a little more detail. A breakthrough is not just the goal, but it’s also the journey. You’re going to learn, and you’re going to learn about yourself.
For example, I realized and I wanted to go to college, I knew that that was supposed to be an important thing to do and that was supposed to be my ticket to get some good job, etc., when I was younger. I didn’t really even know what economics was about when I started college. I was lucky that because I was in the service, when I came back, the Dean had sat down and set up my whole schedule for me so that when I walked in I could start college and start going. It just so happened that actually I wanted to go into finance at the time. He signed me in to two finance classes, and of course, one of my electives he put was an economics class. I realized what I really like was economics, and that finance was kind of simple. It was really easy, it was fairly straightforward, and didn’t cause me to think a whole lot. To me, that just didn’t seem that interesting.
What does this mean? You end up, as you go through your journey towards any success, you’re going to learn things about yourself and you’re going to learn new ideas and new things that you didn’t even know about that might bring your goal out further or into new areas. There’s nothing wrong with this. As you grow, you may choose to change your path. Just don’t let it be a default. Don’t let the path choose you, don’t let your environment choose your path. You shoot out for what you want. Even choosing a job, you’ll see that over time you’ll make changes and you’ll make different decisions. I thought I wanted to go into international finance; that was quite uninteresting to me.
A breakthrough success is not something like just get a degree, or: “I want to get a job as a mechanic.” or: “I want to get a job as an electrician.” or: “I want to get a job as a welder.” It might be: I want to be the best, or the master, or the journeyman, or whatever the top in the field is. I don’t have any idea how I’m going to get there yet, but I’m going to figure that out along the way.
As it turns out, on my path of getting to something like an electrician, I might decide that I really don’t like that, and go into welding or something else, or into teaching it, as opposed to actually doing it. That can happen and those changes can occur, but that should bring you out because you found new things as you were going along the path to that career, but you’re always moving forward. The idea is to be continually moving forward, learning, and finding new things about yourself and what’s out there. You’ll find new things that are interesting to you, more rewarding to you, and more opportunities open up.
Don’t be one of those people that are hoping for the lottery, and hoping for the next lottery ticket. Instead, what the real lottery is: As you advance, you learn, you progress, and you grow – that’s where the opportunities come and they multiply, because everything that you do as you advance, more and more opportunities, both within that field and others, will open up for you, and ideas will open up for you.
You may start out by developing some of your dreams. What do you want? What do you want for your lifestyle, for your family, your home, and where you want to live location-wise, what kind of house you want, etc.? Have those. Do you want a certain kind of car, do you want a boat? Are those things important to you? If they are important to you, they become part of your dream. If you truly want a thorough guide to reaching goals beyond what you thought possible, read “The Mechanics for Breakthrough Success,” available at Amazon.
Then, of course, we have to figure out how you’re going to get there. Some of it may be, and keep in mind from the episode about sacrifice, you may have to sacrifice early to get some of those things later. If you decide to take them now, keep in mind that you’ll be giving up some things for the future. Do you save for the future, or do you educate yourself for the future? Those are all parts of your decisions. If you want to have true breakthrough success, we have to start the journey.
Let me emphasize: Don’t be part of the lottery club, and don’t believe the gurus out there that are telling you that in six or nine months, or a year, you can have a six-figure, seven-figure income and all those other things. Yes, it happens, and they can get a few people that they’ve found that will give testimonials of how they did it, but it’s truly rare. If you can get into and stay above the top 10% in income level, you’re only above $85,000 approximately. Yeah, that’s all. Top 10% is not bad. Top 5%, a little over $100,000. Top 2% is just over $200,000. It really gets you an idea: 1 chance in 50 that somebody is in the top 2%. 1 chance in 50 that somebody is over $200,000. I don’t think that everybody is going to some seminar, and they’re all going to become six figure incomer earners. Yes, I know there will be testimonials; there always are. Statistically, those testimonials are always kind of funny.
Success is not a quick fix. What you want is a life that leads from one Breakthrough Success Journey to the next.
I put together something to set up and start your dream. First develop your dream, and we’ll use that dream after you’ve formed it to carry you through towards that dream. You can download this at my website: https://www.lifeunsettled.com/landingvbfb/. As part of that, you’ll get an invite also to my private Facebook group with likeminded folks where we can exchange ideas and start talking about the dreams, the goals, the impediments, and help each other get through some of those. Thank you very much. I’ll talk to you again soon.
