Kate Erickson, successful in an ad agency, moved to partner with John Lee Dumas in Entrepreneur on Fire. While designated as ‘Content Queen,’ I’ve gotten to know how much more she offers. Yes, she even influenced this podcast’s tagline.
We discuss a lot about her journey. She was not only a great success at an ad agency, but her account was the largest for the agency. Needless to say, she had and developed further a great understanding of the branding and networking involved. Like most who have a great position, she loved it and the industry. We discuss how it all became less enjoyable and more.
Here is where we got into some interesting thoughts and the inner concerns that Kate had about leaving the well paid successful job and moving into the entrepreneurial world. This is not just about the decision, but also some very personal issues. John Lee Dumas of “Entrepreneur on Fire” (EOF) and Kate Erickson were boyfriend and girlfriend. Most people might think that you would be worried about how a working relationship would affect the personal one. Kate knew that EOF was John’s baby and wondered where she would fit, which really means, how will she meaningfully contribute. Also, when John first brought up the idea, he was only into the business for 5 months and had not started to make any money. She had confidence in him, but I want properly set the stages. Two months later when she did join, it was clear to here that it would be successful. Now, I have to interject here to mention that it seems so clear how well they fit in business, but it’s different when you’re too close to be unbiased. We discussed the thoughts that ran through her mind leading up to and through the decisions she made.
Kate brings us through a lot thoughts and issues that most people moving out into the business world will go through.
We discussed what she found as the biggest mistakes people seem to make when starting a business and also those starting podcasts.
We discussed the tactics to learn from others (listen to episode #7 “The Easiest Path to Success”), but define your own target market.
Kate answered many questions that entrepreneurs face and we discussed them in detail. We went through topics on the risks of going out on your own and what you should do to prepare. We discussed how to lesson the risk before quitting your job. We also discussed some of the difficulties as well as some of the misunderstanding of being an entrepreneur. We even hit on topics in what you need for success and that some people should not become entrepreneurs, and what to consider. There is nothing wrong with being an employee. It’s a personal decision. From me, in non-technical economic terms, , you can’t compare people’s preferences to say one is better, they are their own for their own reasons.
